Michael O'Callaghan
Builder, mentor, product thinker.
I've been building things for as long as I can remember, and getting them wrong for almost as long. That's where most of what I know came from.
I started as someone who wanted to make software work. Then as someone who wanted to make teams work. Eventually I realised that neither of those was the actual job. The job was helping people see clearly enough to decide what deserved building at all.
I wrote my first professional software at 21, and over the twenty-five years since I've been a founder, an engineer, a product and UX lead, and the person quietly holding the whole picture when nobody else could. The platforms I've built have trained more than 50,000 people, and I've built things that never found anyone at all. The second kind taught me more.
Somewhere along the way I stopped describing myself by what I could build. Technology stopped being the point. It became evidence — proof that the thinking underneath was sound. When the thinking is sound, the building is almost easy. When it isn't, no amount of engineering excellence rescues it.
These days the work I care most about happens in conversation. A founder or a product leader describes what they're making. I ask questions until the real problem surfaces. Something loosens. They leave able to say in one sentence what took them an hour to circle around.
I hold what I build lightly. Steward, don't own. Products are held on behalf of the people they serve, and the same is true of the ideas you're most attached to. That posture makes for calmer decisions and better products.
IdeaBubble is not an agency or a consultancy. It's a workshop — mine — and when you work with me, you work with me. I keep it to two or three engagements at a time so the thinking stays deep enough to be worth having.
